Runner Speed Categories

• Fast, Average, Slow based on frequency of stolen base attempts

• Calculate group averages for:

  • first to third, second to home on singles
  • first to home on doubles
  • percentage of ground double plays
  • safe on error not considered, speed is much less important than right/left-handed batter

These aren’t perfect, but as we shall see, they do divide

players into three classes (approx. equal). On the average, those classified as faster advance more, etc.
